Mitch standing out as my favourite of the whole book. I couldn’t get enough of Victor, Mitch and Sydney together. Of course, a good hero/villain tale wouldn’t be complete without sidekicks, and they often steal the show here. Victor was of course the favourite and by the end I was completely rooting for him. Neither are meant to be likeable, but somehow you do find yourself warming to them. Victor and Eli are both complex characters, and it was wonderful to get inside their heads. Whilst it’s totally natural to be terrified of death, I think it’s fair to say most people would risk their neck for a shot at becoming extraordinary. Victor and Eli stumbling upon this fact, and the rest is history. Most interesting was the idea that you got your powers from a near death experience as that felt like something new.
Vicious explores the concept of EO’s, or ExtraOrdinaries, and how those granted powers outside the usual human limitations might cope. I really enjoyed the read, although perhaps not quite as much as I had expected to. I’m all about those morally grey characters, mostly because it’s more acceptable to publicly declare love for them than those outright villains, so the synopsis for Vicious grabbed me right away. I’ve read and loved her Monsters of Verity duology, but Vicious is the one I was really excited for.
Schwab is one of those authors who’s work is repeatedly recommended. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge-but who will be left alive at the end? In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. Victor and Eli started out as college roommates-brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other.
